5 Yoga-Inspired Ways To Turn Health Goals Into Healthy Actions

What does hot yoga and New Year's resolutions have in common? More than you would think. As I balanced in tree pose during a hot yoga class on New Year's Day, around 62% of Americans were trying to find balance through another method: New Year's resolutions. And while they made a variety of promises - whether to lose weight or spend more time with family - I heard a different kind of resolution: my yoga teacher's mantra of "experiencing what you know." You may know that you're determined and kind, but you have to act that way to fully experience those traits. Similarly, you can't just think - or want - to be healthier in the New Year. You have to act to make those resolutions a reality. Not sure how? Here are five yoga-inspired tips to make 2017 your healthiest year yet! 1. Be honest about the "why" behind your goal. That morning, I didn't necessarily feel like going to yoga. Even though I didn't stay up until midnight, 8:30...

Science, Sleep, and Yoga

According to the Ayurveda philosophy, sleep is one of three pillars that endow the body with strength, vigor, and healthy growth, which can continue until the full span of life. Good quality sleep is a panacea for a healthy health span, your disease-free and functional period of life. But in this hyper-competitive world, most of us complain of a lack of good quality sleep. We’re a world of unhealthy sleepers. When you compare the world statistics of insomnia and poor quality sleep, it is interesting to note that the numbers are nearly similar throughout the world. Within the USA, more than 30% of the population suffers from insomnia and nearly 10 million people in the U.S. use prescription sleep aids. Poor quality sleep: Results in failure to sustain and preserve new memory Triggers obesity and other metabolic disturbances Contributes to accidents, falls, and traffic mishaps Triggers emotional disturbances Lowers immunity making the individual more susceptible to degenerative di...

Tips for meatless meals

Meatless meals are an extremely healthy way of living and help to preserve natural resources as well. It has been scientifically proven that liberal vegetarians live about seven years longer and vegans (those who do not consume any animal products) live about fifteen years longer than meat-eaters. A diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, cereals and nuts will help you in a living a long, healthy life. To follow meatless meals, the first tip is that your daily food regimen should not include any meat products. This can include any dairy products or eggs also, if you would like to follow a strict vegan diet. Giving up meat helps purge the body of toxins and is the beginning of the detoxification process. Secondly, fruits should be consumed in high amounts. Fruits contain antioxidant nutrients that protect the functioning of the body’s organs and systems. Thirdly, eat a lot of different types of vegetables. Dark, leafy green vegetables are rich in iron, which is important for brain...

Why is Yoga So Good for You?

Historically yoga was more than just a method of teaching; it was a way of life. You dedicated yourself to a lifestyle and culture that surpassed meditation techniques and included healthy eating habits, bathing habits, social interaction and work. Its philosophy is rooted in a physical culture of health and well-being that is still emphasised today at yoga retreats and explains why over 15 million people in the world now practise this ancient tradition. Every yoga asana (pose) has a different name and includes standing postures, seated twists, backbends, arm balances, inversions and core holds. The downward facing dog for example, is in itself said to calm the brain, energise the body, improve digestion, strengthen arms and legs and be therapeutic for high blood pressure. Whilst these benefits come as a given with most postures, the practise of yoga as a whole provides many more benefits than you might think… 8 Reasons Why Yoga is So Good For You: 1,Lowers stress and impr...

Yoga is our health insurance

I believe that promoting this idea—that you don’t need health insurance if you practice yoga—that yoga is a replacement for western medicine—is both irresponsible and delusional. On the staff of Yoga for Healthy Aging, we have a medical doctor, two medical researchers, and a physical therapist. And every one of these people not only has their own health insurance, but all would assure you that yoga cannot solve all your health problems. And thinking that it can is both foolish and dangerous. Because modern yoga has been popular in the US for decades now, we now have a large number of people—particularly yoga teachers—who have been practicing yoga for 30, 40, or even more years. And I’ve been watching them struggling with some of the same major health concerns we all must face, from cancer and Parkinson’s disease to serious and lasting injuries due to car accidents and arthritis that necessitates joint replacements. (I’m thinking of people I know here—it’s likely you know other yoga...

Anxiety,Longevity,and Yoga

In today’s hyper-competitive world, stress and competition in all facets of life have taken over contentment and happiness, resulting in a myriad of health issues all of which have alienated us from our own true self. While the use of prescribed and over-the-counter medications can mitigate some of the health issues and allow us to carry on normally with our busy lives, these quick-fix, short-term solutions reduce our ability to monitor and focus on our personal health and well being, and to get closer to our true nature. Anxiety is a normal emotion that most of us experience now and then. It’s the emotion we display commonly at work, before taking a test, when making an important decision, or teaching our very first yoga class. However, chronic anxiety aka anxiety disorders are different as they can cause such distress to life that it interferes with our ability to lead a normal life. Chronic anxiety is a serious mental illness and is experienced as worry and fear that can be overwh...
